Real User Monitoring (RUM) collects performance metrics from live sessions on your website and provides insight into user experience and site speed.
Using Calibre RUM, you can see how real visitors experience your site, identify the performance issues affecting the most people, and make improvements that move the metrics that matter.
Real User Monitoring is part of Calibre’s performance monitoring suite, offered to Starter, Team and Company plans. You can get started by signing up and installing RUM tracking on your website.
What Real User Monitoring gives you#
RUM collects performance from every qualifying session, across all browsers, in near real time. Compared with the Chrome User Experience Report, it is a far deeper and faster collection of data: your own visitors rather than a sample of opted-in Chrome users, segmentable by any dimension, and updated as people browse.
Because it is your real traffic, RUM makes it easy to see the biggest and most widely-seen performance issues first. Sort the Pages Leaderboard by sessions to find the problems affecting the most visitors, then segment to find exactly who is affected.
See what is responsible, with attribution and subparts#
Calibre groups every RUM report by most segments, so you can find where a problem lives: page, page grouping, device, country, browser, navigation type, and the attributed element.
- Element attribution points Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift and Interaction to Next Paint at the specific element responsible, so you know exactly what to fix.
- Subparts break LCP, INP and Time to First Byte into their underlying phases, so you can localise the delay.
RUM, synthetic and CrUX#
RUM is one of Calibre’s three data sources, and it answers a different question from the others:
- Synthetic catches and diagnoses regressions before release, under controlled conditions.
- CrUX tracks the field data Google uses for search ranking. It works for any eligible origin, so you can also benchmark competitors.
- RUM shows how your own visitors experience the site, in near real time and in depth.
For how the numbers compare, see Why your Synthetic, CrUX and RUM numbers differ, and Which data source to use when to pick the right one for a question.
Reports#
- RUM Dashboard: live visitors, sessions, UX Rating and Core Web Vitals charts at a glance.
- RUM Pages: rank every page by performance to find the worst experiences.
- RUM Metric Detail: deep-dive a single metric with trends, subparts and segmentation.
- RUM Audience: the share of experiences that are good, needs improvement or poor, segmented by country, device, browser and more.
- Page Groupings: group related URLs with patterns to measure performance by page type.
- Filtering RUM reports: the device, dimension, URL, aggregation and time-period filters shared across every report.
Plans, sampling and retention#
RUM is available on Starter, Team and Company plans. You control sampling rate, geographic collection and data retention during setup. See Install & Configure RUM for the configuration options, and Tracking User Performance Data for how data is collected, processed and retained.
